Uber driver kidnaps lady and flashes gun to keep her quiet
Viral Gist
A Nigerian lady has shared a chilling experience of how she was nearly kidnapped by an Uber driver in Lagos.
The incident, which she narrated in a video posted on TikTok, has sparked strong reactions online.
According to her, the ordeal began early in the morning as she was on her way to work for an important presentation. Due to the crowd at the park, she decided to book an Uber.
“I was going to work that day, I had a presentation. I left home by 4 a.m. and got to the bus stop by 5. Everyone was struggling, so I ordered Uber,” she said.
She explained that the ride came almost immediately, and she quickly got in without much thought.
Unknown to her, the driver had already cancelled the trip immediately after she entered the car.
“Immediately I ordered, it was just in my front. I rested my body and put my phone inside my bag. I didn’t know the Uber guy had cancelled the trip.”
She said she tried to sleep briefly during the ride but began to feel uneasy. That’s when she noticed something was wrong.
“There was this unrest in my spirit. I opened my eyes and saw that the door handle on my side was broken. There was no way to open it from inside. The glass too—I couldn’t wind it down. Only the driver had control.”
As she became more alert, the driver suddenly showed her a gun.
“He brought out a gun from a hidden compartment and placed it where I could see it, then he put it back. That’s when I knew I was in serious trouble.”
Terrified, she asked him what he wanted from her.
“I asked him if he wanted to kill or kidnap me.”
Luckily, while stuck in traffic, another motorist who had smiled at her earlier noticed her distress. She recalled not smiling back and instead tried to signal him that she was in danger.
“My face was already red. I was crying silently. I leaned against the driver’s side so he could see me properly.”
As the traffic held, the man approached the Uber car and knocked on the window, asking the driver to wind it down. When he didn’t respond, three other men joined him.
“One of them used a stone to break the windshield. They opened the door. I quickly pointed to where the gun was.”
According to her, they discovered the weapon and gave the driver a serious beating for the attempted abduction.
“They found the gun and beat him up that day,” she said.
The video has since gone viral, prompting outrage and concern over rider safety. Many users have called for increased security checks and stricter regulation of e-hailing services in Nigeria.
