Renato Veiga open to Atletico Madrid switch
Sport
Atletico Madrid are nearing an agreement to sign Chelsea defender Renato Veiga, with the Portuguese youngster reportedly giving the green light to a summer switch.
The LaLiga side have turned their focus to Veiga after abandoning their pursuit of Tottenham Hotspur’s Cristian Romero due to the Premier League club’s €70 million valuation.
Atletico view Veiga as a long-term solution to their defensive frailties, especially after last season’s late collapse.
According to reports from Florian Plettenberg, personal terms between Veiga and Atletico are close to being finalized, with the player keen on the move.
Transfer expert Matteo Moretto also confirmed that the 20-year-old has already said yes to joining Los Rojiblancos, although negotiations with Chelsea are still ongoing.
The Club World Cup champions are reportedly open to selling Veiga, but have rejected an initial €35 million offer.
French outlet L’Equipe reports that Chelsea are holding out for €40 million, including performance-related variables.
Veiga, who joined Chelsea earlier this year, is seen by Atletico as a long-term investment rather than a short-term fix, unlike Romero, who was initially targeted to provide immediate leadership in defence.
