Peter Obi should remain in LP, avoid ADC coalition – Shehu Sani

Former federal lawmaker and social commentator Senator Shehu Sani has advised former presidential candidate Peter Obi to remain in the Labour Party (LP) and resist the temptation of leaving the party amid ongoing internal crises and emerging political realignments.

Sani’s remarks come amid growing public speculation over Obi’s political future and possible alignment with other opposition leaders such as Atiku Abubakar, Rotimi Amaechi, and Nasir El-Rufai, all of whom are involved in the emerging ADC-backed alliance.

The lawmaker advised the 2023 presidential candidate on Friday in a birthday message, who turned 63.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), the former senator from Kaduna State wrote:

“Happy Birthday to Mr Peter Obi. My advice, hold thy Labour, it’s the Devil you know. Don’t chase two rabbits at the same time,” he wrote.

Obi, who joined the Labour Party ahead of the 2023 presidential election, emerged as the party’s flagbearer and came third in the contested race. Since then, he has remained a central figure in the party’s political trajectory, attracting widespread youth support and reshaping LP’s national relevance.

However, the party has since been embroiled in leadership crises, with two factions vying for control, raising questions about Obi’s future within its ranks.

Despite being widely associated with a new opposition coalition that recently adopted the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as its platform ahead of the 2027 elections, Obi has repeatedly maintained that he remains a member of the Labour Party.
