Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Adetona, passes away at 91

The Awujale and paramount ruler of Ijebuland in Ogun State, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, has passed away at the age of 91.

His death occurred on Sunday, July 13, 2025, just hours after the demise of his longtime friend, former President Muhammadu Buhari. The twin losses have plunged Nigeria into mourning.

A member of the Ijebu royal family, Prince Adedoyin Alatishe, confirmed the monarch’s death in a post on X, writing in Yoruba: “Baami Ogbagba agbatewole 💔. Erin wo. Omo anikilaya saagbu,” a poetic tribute expressing deep sorrow.

Oba Adetona, who mounted the throne in 1960, was one of Nigeria’s longest-reigning traditional rulers. For over six decades, he served as a revered symbol of tradition, progress, and stability in Ogun State and beyond.

Confirming the monarch’s passing in a statement from Abeokuta, Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State described the development as a monumental loss.

“We mourn the passing of Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, Awujale of Ijebuland. With deep sorrow, we announce the transition of His Royal Majesty… who joined his ancestors today, July 13, 2025, at the age of 91,” the governor posted on X.

Abiodun described the late monarch as a symbol of unity, wisdom, and development. He said under Oba Adetona’s leadership, Ijebuland experienced remarkable cultural revival, infrastructural expansion, and economic growth.

“His role in elevating the Ojude Oba festival to global recognition, alongside his enduring commitment to education, health, and tradition, will remain a timeless legacy,” Abiodun added.

Oba Adetona’s reign was widely celebrated for bringing modernization to the traditional institution while preserving the cultural identity of the Ijebu people.

Condolences have begun pouring in from across Nigeria as the nation mourns the passing of a royal icon whose life and leadership spanned critical periods in the country’s history.
